For a moment, a single image flashed through my mind — Comedian, the most expensive banana in the world, created by Maurizio Cattelan.

Comedian — A Conceptual Artwork Made from a Single Banana
First unveiled at Art Basel Miami Beach in 2019, Comedian consists simply of one banana duct-taped to a wall.
When it was sold for USD 120,000, the world questioned whether it could truly be called art.
Yet through countless re-staged versions and discussions across the globe, it evolved into a symbolic work exploring the boundaries between art and consumption, participation and perception.
The piece was later revisited at Cattelan’s 2023 retrospective at Leeum Museum of Art in Seoul, drawing lively public response.
In 2024, another edition was auctioned at Sotheby’s New York for about 8.7 billion KRW (approx. 6.3 million USD), accompanied by a collector’s performance of “eating the artwork,” which itself became part of the conversation.
“The Work Is No Longer Mine”
Cattelan once said that art, once completed, no longer belongs to the artist.
He considers every reaction — from media coverage to a viewer’s act of consumption — as part of the artwork itself.
“A work of art with only one clear message is a dead artwork,” he remarked.
In that sense, Comedian continues to live, endlessly reinterpreted and redefined through new perspectives.
