마치 길거리에서 숨겨진 띠부실을 찾거나, 포켓몬고에서 희귀 캐릭터를 발견한 듯한 순간이었습니다.
그때는 몰랐습니다. 그게 바로 전 세계를 누비는 거리 예술가 **인베이더(Invader)**의 작품이라는 걸요.
전 세계를 ‘침략’한 거리 예술가, 인베이더
인베이더는 지난 27년간 전 세계 32개국 172개 도시에서 약 4,000여 점의 모자이크를 설치했습니다.
그의 프로젝트 이름은 ‘Invasions’ — 도심을 침략하듯 번져나가는 예술입니다.
그는 각 도시의 특성과 건축 양식에 맞춘 디자인을 고안하고,
‘도심 속 침술(Urban Acupuncture)’이라는 개념 아래 특정 지점에 예술적 개입을 시도합니다.
작은 타일과 강력한 접착제, 그리고 보안장치를 이용해 작품을 완성하면,
그 순간 그 장소는 하나의 작은 미술관이 됩니다.
흥미롭게도 프랑스에서 그의 작업은 공공시설 훼손으로 불법입니다.
그래서 그는 언제나 가면과 고글을 착용하고 활동하며,
정체를 철저히 숨깁니다.

루빅 큐브로 완성하는 또 다른 세계
인베이더는 모자이크 외에도 ‘루빅큐비즘(Rubikcubism)’ 시리즈로 주목받고 있습니다.

A Chance Encounter in a Paris Alley
It was during my trip to France last year, in a quiet alleyway of Paris.
The afternoon sunlight was gently spilling over the streets when my steps stopped in front of a wall.
There, a small pixelated image was attached — unfamiliar yet oddly familiar.
From a distance, it looked like a simple block of colored tiles.
But as I got closer, it reminded me of an old video game character from the 1980s.
In that moment, a question flashed through my mind:
“What is this? Who put it here — and why?”
It felt like discovering a hidden sticker in the city,
or catching a rare Pokémon on a random afternoon walk.
I didn’t know then that what I had stumbled upon was the work of a world-renowned street artist — Invader.
The Artist Who “Invades” Cities Around the World
Over the past 27 years, Invader has installed nearly 4,000 mosaics in 172 cities across 32 countries.
His ongoing project, aptly named “Invasions,” spreads through urban spaces as if gently “invading” them.
Each work is designed specifically for the city it inhabits —
a form of urban acupuncture, where the artist inserts small, precise points of creativity into everyday surroundings.
Using tiny ceramic tiles, strong adhesive, and protective coating,
he turns ordinary street corners into miniature museums.
Interestingly, his actions are considered illegal in France, classified as damage to public property.
That’s why he always wears a mask and goggles while working, keeping his identity completely hidden.
Yet this mystery — the faceless artist behind the pixels — only adds to the intrigue of his art.
Another World Built from Rubik’s Cubes
Beyond his mosaics, Invader is also known for his “Rubikcubism” series,
where he recreates famous artworks and portraits using Rubik’s Cubes.
From icons of pop culture to the legendary footballer Pelé,
his playful reinterpretations blur the line between puzzle and painting.
What might seem like a game at first glance becomes, in his hands,
a thoughtful exploration of how pixels can redefine the boundaries between city, art, and play.
A Personal Museum
Invader’s works aren’t marked on any map.
There are no tickets, no entry hours, no official exhibitions.
You simply encounter them — by chance — as you move through the city.
And at that moment, the wall before you becomes your own personal gallery.
I later found out that there’s just one Invader piece in Korea,
located near the Daejeon Museum of Art.
Someday, I’d love to go there and find that tiny act of “urban acupuncture” myself.
A single pixel hidden on a city wall —
its quiet surprise lingers far longer than you might expect.
