1. Embracing Tradition and Nature (Late 1930s–Mid 1950s)

Kim Whanki (1913–1974) was a pioneer of Korean abstract art.
His early works reveal a deep affection for nature and traditional aesthetics.
Motifs such as porcelain, moon jars, plum blossoms, mountains, and the sea appear repeatedly,
merging the sensibility of minhwa (folk painting) and Asian composition with Western perspective and color fields.

During this period, Kim moved between Tokyo and Seoul, seeking harmony between the traditional and the modern.
He was among the first to attempt a distinctly “Korean Modernism,” expressing local emotion through global form.
