전시 구성 — 다섯 개의 장면으로 엮인 이야기

이번 전시는 2층부터 4층까지 총 다섯 개의 섹션으로 구성되었습니다.

Section 1 – The Lab (2층)
작가의 작업 과정을 담은 다큐멘터리와 작업실을 재현한 공간이 전시의 시작점이 되었습니다. 캔버스 위에 작은 인물이 탄생하기까지의 여정을 엿볼 수 있었습니다.

Section 2 – Life on Canvas (3층)
삶의 다양한 순간이 캔버스 위에 펼쳐졌습니다. 작은 인물들이 만들어내는 이야기의 리듬이 흥미로웠습니다.

Section 3 – Forbidden Grass (3층)
규칙과 질서를 넘어서는 자유로운 상상력이 담긴 작품들이 이어졌습니다. 작가 특유의 유머와 장난기 있는 시선이 드러났습니다.

Section 4 – Wet (4층)
물결, 파도, 젖은 질감을 표현한 작품들이 전시 공간 전체를 생동감 있게 채웠습니다.

이번 전시는 ‘깊은 울림’보다는 하루를 잘 마무리한 뒤 쓰는 짧은 일기 같은 전시였습니다. 무겁지 않고, 즐겁고, 편안하게 볼 수 있었고, 관람 후에는 묘하게 좋은 에너지가 남았습니다.

다만 한 가지 아쉬움은 있었습니다. 전시 공간의 절반 이상이 프린트 작품으로 채워져 있었어요. 브롱크호스트의 진짜 매력은 거친 텍스처와 두꺼운 물감이 만들어내는 질감인데, 프린트로는 그 생생한 감각이 완전히 전달되지 않았습니다. 티켓 가격을 고려하면, 원화 중심의 구성이었다면 훨씬 더 깊은 감동을 전할 수 있었을 것 같습니다.

마무리하며

전시는 때로는 삶을 되돌아보게 만들고, 때로는 잠시 쉬어가게 합니다.
이번 전시는 후자에 가까웠습니다. 무겁지 않은 위로, 그리고 잠시 숨을 고를 수 있는 시간.
아이와 함께 가도 좋고, 서촌 산책길에 들러보기에도 좋은 전시였습니다.

Werner Brunkhorst — A Small World on a Rough Surface

Australian artist Werner Brunkhorst is best known for his distinctive way of placing miniature figures on rough-textured canvases.
His backgrounds transform into waves, beaches, tennis courts, and sometimes even the Han River — allowing viewers to discover grand narratives and fleeting stories within tiny human scenes.

Brunkhorst has exhibited in major cities around the world and collaborated with global brands. He is also a father of two, and perhaps that’s why his works carry a sense of humor, warmth, and familiarity. The exhibition space was filled with families and children, and even my child could enjoy it comfortably. It was one of those exhibitions that make everyone smile — regardless of age.

Exhibition Structure — Five Stories Across Three Floors

The exhibition was spread over the second to fourth floors, divided into five themed sections.

Section 1 – The Lab (2F)
A recreation of the artist’s studio and a documentary about his process introduced the origins of his creative vision.

Section 2 – Life on Canvas (3F)
Everyday moments unfolded on canvas. The narratives created by the tiny figures were especially captivating.

Section 3 – Forbidden Grass (3F)
Works filled with playful imagination and freedom beyond rules and order were on display.

Section 4 – Wet (4F)
Pieces expressing water, waves, and wet textures filled the space with vivid energy.

Section 5 – Every Moment (4F)
The highlight of the exhibition — a new piece inspired by the Han River.
Simplified into three colors, it left a calm and peaceful impression, like a pause between breaths.

A Gentle Afterglow

Rather than a “profound” experience, this exhibition felt more like a diary entry written at the end of a good day — light, joyful, and easy to enjoy. I left the gallery feeling quietly energized.

If there was one thing to note, it would be that more than half of the works were prints rather than originals. Brunkhorst’s charm lies in the tactile richness of thick paint and texture, which is hard to fully feel through prints. Considering the ticket price, a selection centered on original works might have created a deeper emotional impact.

In Closing

Art sometimes makes us reflect deeply on life, and at other times, it simply allows us to rest.
This exhibition belonged to the latter — a light and cheerful break from daily routine.
It’s a perfect show to visit with children, or to pair with a slow afternoon walk through Seochon.
